The Hotel Next in Funchal on Madeira impresses with its excellent location right on the water. The rooms, although spacious, tend to create a somewhat subdued atmosphere due to their darkness. Nevertheless, the hotel scores with comfortable beds, modern furnishings and attractive bathrooms. Breakfast, served in a canteen style, has a limited selection and the quality could be improved. A highlight, however, is the beach club on the water, which, although without a beach, stands out positively with a pool and direct access to the sea via a jetty.

Hotel Quinta Da Penha De Franca is within it's own complex and is up the hill from its sister hotel Quinta Penha de Franca Mar. You can use the facilities within Quinta Penha de Franca Mar as well. Both are linked together by means of a private bridge which goes over the road, this is pretty seamless, but you do have to go out the door of the De Franca and buzz back in, but too much of an issue. Quinta Da Penha De Franca is set within gardens and has a heated pool which can be used, complimentary pool towels provided. You can also use the pool at Franca Mar which is unheated, but was still warm enough, and is salt water, from here you also have direct private access to the sea. Rooms are of a good size, I would recommend staying in the main complex rooms. There are around 4 rooms which are around Rooms 40-44 which are separate from the main complex, that can be nice, but note the Irish Bar is just over the wall, so can be a little noisy at times. Rooms were clean, air conditioning good, TV and mini bar, which if you want to indulge was good value. Beds were big, and very comfy which helped for a good nights sleep. Room Service is also available, though oddly no complimentary tea & coffee provided in the room, which I would expect in a four star. The location is excellent, on the edge of the hotel area means a short walk into town, and short walk to other restaurants and bars in the hotel district so a real positive. Parking is also very good, they have a large free to use carpark, so brilliant if you are planning to hire a car to explore the island like we did, we had no issues parking. Breakfast was also very good, a mix of continental, Portuguese and cooked buffet options. Service was friendly and overall a very enjoyable stay was had.

Hotel facilities and equipment, although old, but also basically meet the needs of use, breakfast is very rich, the room given by the front desk should be considered the largest of the same type, but the floor is too low, the parking lot is noisy, the fly in the ointment is less front desk staff Smile, communication is frosty, resort hotels should not be like this. There is also a small episode at check-in. The front desk must ask me to send the order to the hotel's mailbox, and she has my order number in hand. Is it ridiculous!

The hotel is right by the sea, next to the CR7 museum. There are a lot of Ronaldo elements in the hotel, and the fans have perfect punch cards. The first day to the hotel to provide the Welcome drink is quite delicious, the CR7 corner downstairs tastes good.

Do okrycia prześcieradło z zawiniętym w nim kocem i narzutą, oddzielnie dla każdego łóżka. Rozwiązanie dyskusyjne - koszt sejfu w pokoju to 14 euro za 7 dni - duży TV, w którym są wszystkie istotne info na temat hotelu - kiepskie wyciszenie akustyczne ścian i stropów (słychać nieco głośniejsze rozmowy). Dobre wyciszenie okien, praktycznie nie słychać szumu oceanu - wystarczająca na 2 osoby ilość szaf i półek. Przy łóżkach lampki nocne - na zewnątrz temperatury ok 16-18°C przy zachmurzeniu (w połowie stycznia). Po zamknięciu okna w pokojach w miarę ciepło. Klimatyzacji nie udało nam się włączyć. - w pokoju tylko 1 wolne gniazdo elektryczne. Można kupić w sklepie Continente rozgałęźniki elektryczne, w rozmaitych wersjach już od 1,5 euro. Niestety w moim pokoju położenie komody blokowało ich włożenie do gniazda - w hotelu (10 pięter). Są 2 przeszklone i nowoczesne windy. Od 3 pietra w górę zapewniają świetny widok na ocean. Niestety, strasznie wolno się otwierają, co radykalnie opóźnia ich pracę. Czasami, przy większym ruchu, zdecydowanie szybciej przejść po schodach - codziennie do pokoju jest dostarczana 1 butelka wody (1 litrowa, jeżeli wypiło się poprzednią). Chociaż niektórzy skarżyli się, że jej nie dostawali, - w łazience jest wanna z kotarą, 2 mydła w kostce, 2 szampony do włosów, gniazdo elektryczne. Brak suszarki do włosów. Ręczniki dobrej jakości w wystarczającej ilości. Woda w kranach miękka. W moim przypadku brak konieczności zakupienia żelu po kąpieli - hotel ma 50 lat, lecz jest bardzo zadbany i czysty. Kłopotliwe jest odnalezienie części wspólnych, np. restauracji, baru, zejścia na basen, itd. z uwagi na nieintuicyjne zaprojektowanie tej części hotelu - pokoje są sprzątane bardzo dokładnie - w hotelu jest dobra i nienachalna obsługa - animacji nie zauważyłem, co dla mnie nie było wadą. Wieczorem są koncerty na żywo - położenie hotelu fantastyczne, ok. 20 m od wód zatoki. Okna w lobby i restauracji zapewniają panoramiczny widok na zatokę i ocean, niestety częściowo przesłonięty przez drzewa - zimą w hotelu jest otwarty jedynie bar wewnątrz hotelu (Piano Bar – 2 poziomy powyżej restauracji). Dostaniesz w nim np. drinki, soki, kawę, brandy, whisky, wódkę, wino (w tym 4 rodzaje wina Madeira). W przerwach między posiłkami dostępne są w określonych godzinach bardzo skromne przekąski, głównie chleb tostowy z żółtym serem i wędliną oraz kuleczki z dipem. Chętnych na przekąski nie zauważyłem - ok 10-15 min. spacerem od hotelu znajdują się 2 duże markety Continente oraz Pingo Doce (w tym drugim zjecie nawet ciepły posiłek i napijecie się kawy) - okna w pokojach wychodzą na ocean lub na zatokę i panoramę Machico -goście hotelowi to większości francuscy seniorzy oraz Polacy - blisko do przystanków autobusowych, ok 200 m do przystanków do i ze stolicy

Very pleasant stay. We had expected a basic inner 'courtyard view' room but on arrival were pleased to have been allocated a room with a side sea view. The room was spotlessly clean, light and airy and the bed comfortable. Tea/coffee making area and a fridge to store milk (or wine!). Nice pool and pool bar with a great view. The main downside was the noisy pipework which woke us up at night. Another was the 'hot' offering at breakfast, which sadly was never hot, and the bacon was the strangest we have ever seen. Strange 'juice' too. But thankfully there was a good variety of other breakfast items to choose from so this wasn't a massive issue. Some reviewers have spoken of staff attitude, but we always found the staff friendly and approachable.

Our experience of the hotel was enhanced by our meal in the restaurant, which I have reviewed separately. My favourite thing about the room was the enclosed balcony. It was like having a private yoga studio in the sky. (Fellow yogis note, the floor was slippery.) I also enjoyed the spectacular view from the Sauna, which at the time was free because it was not working optimally. (So do ask!) It was good enough for me, but it took over an hour to heat up. The Pool looked too small and shallow to actually swim in, but mostly it was unusable as it was colder than the sea. I don’t know if this was usual. Breakfast was fairly similar to ones we had at other Madeira hotels, but this place had the tastiest selection of fresh bread rolls and very good garlicky mushrooms. The room was clean. We liked the 3-section recycling bin in the room. Others mentioned lack of plugs for phones. Erm... we knew about that but were surprised to find that there were not enough plugs for the room items. The Kettle and TV had to share a wall outlet. They really should consider supplying an extension lead, which could be given out and collected at check-in, just as they (bizarrely) do with the TV remote control. We did start off on a rather bad note. At check in, we were downright ignored. One receptionist was settling a dispute with another guest, but both members of staff deliberately avoided any sort of eye contact with us. I don't normally notice this sort of thing, but it was rude and infuriating and lasted some time. A simple nod would have sufficed. I’ll put this down to a bad day for the first member of staff, who later was helpful. After a long wait for no discernible reason, the other receptionist demanded payment before we had even seen the room, for which we had paid in advance. We've stayed at many places who use multiple booking sites. Sometimes you pay on arrival, sometimes beforehand, and we understand that the hotel needs to know. However, there are ways of asking that don't come across as offensive and like one is trying to get away with something. Not everyone is out to steal the remote control. Make sure you bring proof of payment if you’ve paid in advance, as we had. The hotel is lucky that they have out of this world views.

Having just spent 5 nights at Ocean Gardens I think it represents really good value for money. There’s a few things that if addressed would have made my stay perfect but I think back to how reasonably priced this place was and I don’t think you can expect perfection. Firstly I’ll mention the beautiful views. From my room and balcony I could see out into the ocean and it’s lovely. Unfortunately this also looks out onto a road which at times was a little noisy. If you’re a light sleeper this may bother you in the morning. From the restaurant and pool areas you can see out into the bay of Funchal. This is an exceptional view. The restaurant was lovely, brilliant setting and good service. The food is well cooked and represents typical food of the area. Though it’s very meat-heavy! There was music playing on a few nights that made me want to pierce my ear drums but that’s personal taste! The room itself was spacious but a little dated. At first I was impressed by the huge bed but it was in fact two singles pushed together not not fixed together. Having two single mattresses meant I really only slept on one for fear of falling down the middle so was a bit disappointing that I spent a week on a single bed tbh. That bathroom is spacious and clean. However I didn’t ever get what I’d consider to be HOT water. Either from the sink, bath or shower. It was warm at best. The room has floorboards and whilst a nice feature it means when someone in walking in the room above or to the side of you, you hear every step! Wifi is patchy at best. Ok in the room but elsewhere in the hotel not so great. Not brilliant because 4G service isn’t perfect in the area either. It rained a few times while I was there and both times that resulted in my balcony being flooded due to there being a slope. The pool area is lovely. Lots of space and loungers. The pics on here don’t do it justice. How’re eve the pool was REALLY cold! Expected for the time of the year and it meant the pool and area were very quiet. Staff are efficient and friendly. The shuttle into Funchal was good but it’s also easy to get into Funchal from the busy stop on front of the hotel at anytime. Reception only give you details for Bus 39 when I’m fact there’s about 4 or 5 buses that can take you on and bring you back. It’s about €2 a trip and they run into the evening. All in all I enjoyed my stay and as above I do this it represents good value for money. But if you’re expecting sleek, modern and perfection you’d maybe want to spend more and look elsewhere.
