Delicious Indonesian Javanese food specially created by the host, May, as well as the level of dedicated service is the highlight of this hotel.
The menu food sounds unappealing, but all 7 lunch and dinners were so good.
You have to try the chicken satay, which is soft and has white clean meat.
The tuna is melted and panini is so fresh.
The spaghetti cakalang is her created recipe of smoked fish and spaghetti. Her tofu and Tempe must not be missed!
Her tempong chicken is yummy and fresh! Feels like it's directly from the farm.
Nasi goreng must not be missed!
Papayas seem to be in the season.
Fried bananas covered in coconut flakes are not to be missed!
In this hotel, don't expect luxury cleanliness because there are a lot of insects (bees, butterflies, moths, grasshopper, flies), spiders, millipedes, lizards, even a gecko. If you want to stay in this rustic resort you have to be okay with them.
I didn't like the insects stuff in the room but the hosts immediately sent their staff to deal with them. Staff are friendly just be patient with them because not all speak English.
May was a super host, who gave ALL sorts of ideas on where to go, and how to go, and gives you contacts and numbers and details. Ibnu makes the best dirty latte in Banyuwangi, most probably. The hosts are very nice and go out of the way to make their guests welcome. They even dropped us at a nearby tour site, and also gave us a short walk to the beach nearby.
This level of service is almost unbeatable. Staff are always ready and welcome to greet and smile at you.
I think the Indonesian and Javanese meals are better than the breakfast menu.
Breakfast pancake and American breakfast normal only.
They generously dropped us off at Bangsring Underwater which was 3-5 mins away, which MUST NOT BE MISSED for snorkelling beginners! (But first check out if the season is good for snorkelling)
If you stay here, be prepared there's not much in the area. And not much air-conditioned cafes or restaurant or shops nearby too.
The family room has a breathtaking view of the mountains but because of the attic like structure, is prone to insects and lizards and stuff. It had a resident gecko.
The deluxe suite room had a flat ceiling so lesser insects! + huge verandah for drying your clothes + pink bougainvillea.
There are corn fields beside the hotel.
They send food to your room if you don't want to eat in the restaurant which also has a amazing view. Restaurant has rustic vibes with antique candelabras
(+ spiders).
Stayed for 3 nights in Room 2 (infront of Reception) and Room 5 ( in front of breakfast area), and then 1 night in Room 9 and 10 on second floor.
Great service and staff, they really do try their best to accommodate your needs. Mediocre breakfast - instant noodle should not be a part of any restaurant's menu, unless street food stall is the standard you are after. But they have variety in their breakfast menu, we appreciate that.
It is an old house turned into a guest house - i. e. the walls are thin, the whole outdoor area is a smoking area hence whenever someone smoked, we smelled it inside our room (Room 5). To maximise their space, there are 2 rooms infront of entrance/ reception/ common waiting area (Room 1 and 2). All the rooms on 1st floor were constantly noisy, we could hear everyone's footsteps, chats and because it was the holiday season - big chatty families hanging out until late at night are a nightmare for us.
Rooms on 2nd floor were very nice, walls are still thin, the balcony is the size of a walkway thus minimizing people smoking infront of your rooms, rooms are smaller, but quieter for a good rest.
Water pressure and hot water in shower are excellent.
You can do better with adding a couple of more wifi extender.
We so appreciate the staff, they are helpful, they let us refill our water bottles, they help us reheat our food.
They have a small cafe - staff should be trained to direct guests intending to chat to this area.
The guesthouse should have a designated smoking area - away from rooms.
The guesthouse should have a quiet time to allow other guests to rest - e.g. Quiet time from 10am to 8 am or whatever normal time people have breakfast. It is not great to have to hear children shouting at 06:30 excited to have breakfast. Or repurpose your cafe to early breakfast time (06:00-08:00)- away from rooms and then back to common breakfast area after 08:00. Since your breakfast is not a buffet breakfast anyway. I hope the guesthouse reads this review as we love the staff, we'd like them to keep their jobs. But guesthouse management/ owner can do a way better job at managing their wonderful staff.
Currently, I highly recommend this hotel if you're staying for 1night: location is excellent, bedsheets are clean, shower is great, price is excellent and staff is wonderful. I do not recommend staying there for more than 1 night unless you're there already and the hotel isn't fully occupied. Paying full up front as i did making a booking through this app is one of the gravest mistake i have done. We barely slept through the 3 out of 5 days we stayed there. Photos enlisted on this website are deceiving (aren't they all) - only 3/4 rooms in the guesthouse are of sizable space - the rest are tiny, trying to fit 2 suitcases in a room for 2 was a pain.

Ouf, what a hidden gem! The bungalows at Purwa Ijen are top-notch, offering an amazing value for money. It is located in a super authentic, small and peaceful village with beautiful views and lush vegetation (besides all the rice fields). Our highlight was the breakfast, where we got the best smoothie bowl on our whole trip through Indonesia. The Ijen tour (500K) was also an unbeatable price. Transfer to the Bali ferry for 200K was also affordable. We especially loved the spacious bathroom and the comfy terrace with jungle and ricefield view. IMHO Purwa Ijen is one of the best value accommodation you can find in the Ijen area, highly recommended. WiFi also worked like a breeze.
Unfortunately, our stay at this hotel left mixed impressions. Although the building has a historical appearance, which could add charm, inside there is a smell of old age and dampness, which creates an uncomfortable atmosphere. The breakfasts were also disappointing - the dishes were unpalatable and monotonous. Another significant disadvantage was the unstable Internet connection: Wi-Fi was constantly interrupted, which was inconvenient. In general, despite the interesting architecture of the building, the level of comfort leaves much to be desired.
