The Royal Hotel ★★★

"Avoid! They really don’t care about your custom. We are local and try the Royal every few months, as it always looks such a nice setting on the water front. But it never fails to disappoint, either the food standard, the service or both. Today was typical, our elderly parents sat down at 1020am and were given menus for breakfast, we got to the table at 1030 and place our order at the bar at 1040. Half way through the order another of the staff came out from the kitchen to tell her colleague breakfast is over. She did say she was halfway through the process so could it be honoured but apparently the kitchen had stopped. We were disappointed but it’s not the end of the world for us as we’ll order off the brunch menu. We were told ‘that’s not possible either, not until after midday’ 1 hour 20 mins time. But do we still want the ‘4 cappuccinos as we’ve already put them through’ honestly avoid the place, is a pantomime. For me I’d have thought before closing the kitchen it’s best to check the restaurant for any pending orders, and give the customers a hurry up. But they really aren’t bothered. Hopefully we will remember our own advice and avoid the Royal again in six months time!!"

"Wonderful small hotel with lovely helpful staff. The rooms are beautifully presented and spotlessly clean, though ours, room 5, was on the small size for a twin room. The food is excellent and more than ample. We had dinner which, on Sunday, is a typical Sunday roast plus a small number of other options, and breakfast which had a full range of options, all very well prepared and presented. As a small country hotel it has a very homely feel which is amplified by the friendly staff. Private secure feeling car park has a rather tight entrance but just needs care. A large party at dinner were rather noisy but that can happen anywhere. We'll be back for a meal next time we are in the area and to stay if we have time."
