"I would not stay here again unless the room came with a toilet that was not inside the shower. I’ve never known anywhere where you’re expected to shower where you s**t. The room I stayed had toilet water flowing into the shower when you flushed the loo. Really terrible plumbing. Your literal faeces flowed back out into the shower and needed to be rinsed into the drain. I asked for the toilet to be repaired at reception but something lost in translation and they sealed the base of the toilet. Twin room is ok size. Food is very nice, generous portions. Lifts are small and cramped but similar to most ski resorts. Communal spaces on each floor are nice but sound travels easily and you can hear conversations if your room is close to the hall areas. Location great as it just near the bottom of the piste and accessible to the snow and beginner slopes."

Harmony Suites - Monte Carlo

"Always hard to write a review because mostly it's relative to your expectations, and I have to bear in mind this was our visit to Bulgaria, having previously had family (young kids) beach holidays in Portugal, Cyprus, Greece and Spain. On that wider point, I'd say Bulgaria has some catching up to do and only has the fact it's marginally cheaper in its favour e.g. Harmony Suites we paid a similar price to what we paid for quite a bit bigger two bedroom apartment in Portugal last year. In terms of that comparison, the pools were probably nicer at Harmony Suites and you did have the option to use other complexes that are part of the same company e.g. there's a gym in Harmony suites 1 just a few minutes walk along the road. On this theme, I wasn't too impressed that the football activity that was available for kids - my son went once - was about 10 dollars for an hour, reflective of the fact there wasn't much that was "included" in your stay. I asked the coach if the pitch (standard 5 a-side astroturf area) was open when nothing booked there e.g. for activities, and he said, no, it's locked! Most places I've stayed before, you can book or use areas like that without additional charge. Our 2-bed apartment was a bit cramped - living room small and kitchenette part of that same room, very small. I was disappointed to find there was zero left for us e.g. no tea, coffee, sugar, oil, salt etc. Zero. Also, no pots or utensils so had to ask the cleaners to bring those (I don't think that was a hassle for them but it's a bit weird in my experience to have to ask for them). Pool areas good. Usually enough lounger space (though there is quite a weird (from Western European perspective) VIP area near one of the pools that you have to pay extra to lounge at and no one in the 2 weeks we were there ever sat/lay there. Pools nice, and ideal for our 6 and 10 year olds. We ate at the restaurant one night and the staff were friendly and the food was good for decent price (on a par with some of the touristy places near the beach; decent value; tasty food). Most of the guests were Russian speaking (a few Ukrainians and a few Russians, which surprised us with the war and everything and us expecting it to be difficult for Russians to travel to the EU). Some Bulgarian families also. A handful of Western European (us, a Danish family, another family we think may have been Swedish -guessing with the languages here!). I've read some reviews suggesting the staff weren't too friendly. Honestly didn't have an issue with that. Different nationalities have slightly different manners and mannerisms. I definitely think English language could be a bit stronger in this complex but they made an effort and I wouldn't fault them. I'd say if you're a family looking for somewhere you'll get a decent sleep, not far from all the action but far enough to escape, this is a decent shout. Having said that, I think for our family situation, it'll be back to Portugal next year."

"Pros......Clean foyer & smelt lovely, rooms basic but comfortable, 2 pools, plenty of sunbeds, close to shops & bars & 5 min walk to the fantastic beach & there is a supermarket across the street Cons......Food wasn't great, cold food, didn't cater for the english, no evening entertainment, played music during the day that I found not suitable for young kids as some lyrics where quiet rude, snack bar at the smaller pool permanently closed as was the mini market & spa, no tea, coffee or refreshment facilities after 11pm as restaurant doors were locked, bedding changed once (but I think it was because I gave the cleaning lady a tip as our friends in the next room wasn't changed in 7 days) had to ask for clean towels A friend stayed 2 years ago & said it was amazing this is why we chose this hotel but I would not return again"

Alua Helios Bay - All Inclusive

"In a quiet area, far from the problems of the big city. The atmosphere is like in a traditional all inclusive hotel! There was plenty to do! The rooms were clean and had everything you needed! The staff was really nice. The food in the restaurant was good, but the music was sometimes too loud. I think the hotel is worth the money."

"Een prachtig, rustig en gezellig hotel. U wordt een zeer warm welkom gegeven, alsof u speciale gasten waren. De kamers zijn schoon. Chris, de eigenaar, is zeer vriendelijk en opmerkzaam. Hij is er altijd om te helpen als je het nodig hebt en blij om advies of aanbevelingen te bieden. We waren zeer verheugd met het hotel. De locatie is ook comfortabel. De meest populaire kleine restaurants en een winkel zijn dichtbij. It’s not far to the beach or the Old Town either. The breakfasts at the hotel are homeade and delicious. We’ll definitely be back there again someday :)"

"It won't be easy to find an open door and someone waiting for you at this hotel located in the upper part of town quite far from the seaside, parking on the street in front of the establishment. The person who welcomed us (reservations made on Booking) was the cleaning lady who spoke only Bulgarian and we were able to communicate via a telephone translator, it is in your interest to understand everything about how it works the first time and ask the right questions, because more person after 2 minutes, you will be alone in the establishment with other tourists (Bulgarians and Russians during our stay). Otherwise the room we chose was on the 3rd floor with a small balcony and sea view (far away of course), nice surface and clean overall (you should not look in the corners and on the doors), small refrigerator starting to flee, the lack of maintenance is glaring here, it must have been superb 10 years ago!! you are even encouraged not to eat breakfast because it is supposedly of poor quality (maybe the wife doesn't want to get up early to prepare it?). So it was breakfast outside and in a good atmosphere! Bathroom Bulgarian toilet with shower in a corner and watering the whole! Establishment just good for a visit."
