I stayed at the Oro Verde hotel in Cuenco on a solo vacation, December 2023. I didn’t know anything about Cuenca, but used TripAdvisor’s reviews to help me pick the best hotel there as I booked it about two weeks before I was set to arrive. I took an early flight to Cuenca form Quito and arrived around 8:00 a.m., very apologetic and fully understood it might be one of those situations where I left my bag at registration and would have to come back later to check in, but they already had my room ready to go and so I was immediately put at ease knowing that I had a place first thing in the morning. Their website also advertises that they have the best breakfast in Cuenca and it is pretty good! They even let me have the breakfast at a discounted rate because I checked in early. I got a king suite and it was very large and spacious. Two flatscreen tvs, a massive bed. The room was also sort of elevated from the other rooms in the row, which made it seem special. Everything was super tidy and there was good climate control. There were also a lot of outlets which I also find super important when I travel. The property itself is pretty spread out more than it is tall. There’s a nice café on the first floor and the restaurant that houses the breakfast in the morning is more upscale than the typical chain hotel experience. The one thing that may put someone off is that the old town is about a forty five minute walk from there. But the taxi to the old town is about $2.50, so it’s not a big deal if you don’t want to do the walk (I did it both ways one day, it isn’t bad). Everyone was so nice and welcomed me with a “buenos dias” everytime I passed a staff member. Another great feature is access to a full gym (with free weights and everything) onsite if you are conscientious about exercising while eating all that rich vacation food. I’ve also talked to locals who say that that Oro Verde is the best hotel in the city. So to revisit the question posed by my title? Yes, it is the best hotel in Cuenca and II would definitely stay again next time I’m in Cuenca.
