We had planned to stay at the Parador, but it was fully booked, so we stayed here for 8 nights instead. Despite its four star rating, Hotel Rio Bidasoa was about half the price - so our expectations were not great. The hotel is well located with a convenient car park, and the reception area is welcoming (as were the staff). Buffet breakfast was generally good, and the bedroom was spacious, well equipped and air-conditioned. My primary criticism is that the building is bland and characterless. Internal decor (particularly in the bedrooms) lacks warmth and colour - it feels spartan and utilitarian despite being very clean and well appointed (TV, Nespresso machine, fridge, safe etc). Also - be warned that the laminate flooring seems to amplify and transmit sounds between rooms - you could literally hear a pin drop!. Despite the negatives, this is a good hotel and it offers great value.

We were staying at our friends home in San Sebastián until the tour d France closed the road to the airport. Decided to stay close to the airport in hondarribia! Such a cute little sea side town! The Jaizkibel was a pleasant surprise! The hotel is has a cozy inviting courtyard and dining room and the grounds are beautiful. The rooms, though small, are very comfortable and the staff goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable! I would definitely come back to this place!

Two casually dressed multi-millionaire retirees enter this magnificent, Spanish government sponsored example of excellence with their wives to enjoy a light lunch. Within the vaulted, ancient stone entrance, stands a grand plate glass doorway upon which is written, ”Only registered guests beyond this point.” The men request entry to the restaurant within, but the hotel's government employee descending gestures to the left, toward a perfectly appointed cafe, and then with great pomp, throws the glass door shut! The gesture reminds the ladies of an American motor vehicle office; an environment dominated by ill-trained, unmotivated beneficiaries of political graft. One wife remarks, ”I won't eat in that dark cave! Let's go elsewhere.” What could have been an exquisite invitational experience was, for lack of training and simple human courtesy, a lasting disincentive. The men had planned, after their lunch, to book a three week tour of Spanish paradors. Instead, they chose to adjust their plans west of the Spanish border.

Sercotel Jauregui is a modern hotel in the centre of Hondarribia. There are signs to the hotel as you enter the town, so it is easy to find. There was also ample parking at the front of the hotel to allow us to unload our luggage and book in. As parking can be difficult in Hondarribia however, I booked the hotel’s private parking which is just around the corner in an underground car park. It was easy to find and the spaces are a good size. Our room on the first floor was modern and well-appointed and, as it is a corner room, it also felt very light and cool. As I’ve already said, the hotel is centrally located and is adjacent to Calle San Pedro, which is the Main Street in town for bars etc. The promenade is just a couple of minutes walk and the wonderful old town is an easy 10 minute stroll. Breakfast was top class and in addition to the normal Continental selection of fruit, cold meats, cheeses etc., you could have tortilla or (and even better) decent bacon and perfectly cooked scrambled eggs. Throughout our stay all members of staff were pleasant and helpful and we would certainly use this hotel again.

We have stayed at Ibis Irun many times, although not for a few years. Its ideally placed, near to the toll motorway and is perfect for travellers either going North into France or South further into Spain. Its not near the town, but if all you want is a bed for the night its clean & comfy, food in the restaurant was reasonable, there is a secure gated surface car park and they accept dogs. However, on this occasion there are some issues, I want to raise. The hotel is currently housing several families of Ukranian refugees and whilst we applaud the Spanish governments reponse to the refugee crisis and Accor Hotel's help with this, I do not think that unruly, unsupervised children should be allowed to play on bicycles & scooters in the public lounge (which is not very large) when weary travellers are trying to relax with a drink. The outside terrace was similarly not a place to relax with some of the older children playing loud music on mobile phones. We had driven a long way that day to reach Ibis Irun and relaxation was simply not possible. I would also point out that allowing very small unsupervised children to play in the carpark was extremely dangerous for them and a couple of times there was some very near misses with cars coming in and not expecting to encounter small children in their way.
