It is located behind the NHK Yokohama Broadcasting Station, about two blocks away from the area where historic buildings such as the former Kanagawa Prefectural Office gather. The building itself is only partially preserved, so it's likely to be overlooked, but it's the oldest Western-style building in Yokohama. The exterior is painted with mortar for preservation, but the interior can be seen with white-eyed French bricks made of gypsum.
A Western-style building just in front of the KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theater. It's more of a ruin than a nice Western-style building. This is the only brick remains of the Yokohama settlement. At the corner of the intersection behind the Kanagawa Arts Theater, there is a small building with the signboard of "Former Yokohama Residential Area 48". This building is part of the remains of the building built in 1897 as a store of Morrison Shokai, which handles dynamite when it was a foreign settlement, and is considered to be the oldest Western-style building in Yokohama. Only a part of it is preserved now, but if you look inside, you can see the French brick walls. A small building that you pass by without notice ...
It looks cute in a small white building. But when you look through the glass, it feels like a messy warehouse. The early story is a "waste house". It's an architecture that you should enjoy just by looking at it.
The former Yokohama Residential Area 48 Building on the northwest corner of the NHK Yokohama Broadcasting Station is said to be the first Western building in Yokohama, built in 1883. It is still preserved and you can peek inside, but to be honest, I got the impression that it was a ruin. It's good that it's easy to understand because there is an explanation board.
