The mosque was built during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I on June 27, 1773 AD. The Mataram Kotagede Mosque Complex is designated as a cultural heritage by Regulation of the Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia No. PM.25/PW.007/MKP/2007 dated March 26, 2007.
