Wanzhou Museum

Wanzhou District Museum is a local comprehensive museum established in 1984 with the approval of the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. It was formerly named the Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing. In October 1999, it was renamed the Wanzhou District Museum. In 2016, it was relocated to the Three Gorges Immigrant Memorial Hall next to the Citizen Square in Jiangnan New District, Wanzhou District and merged with it. In September 2018, after the museum self-assessment declaration, the provincial museum industry organization evaluation, the National Museum Evaluation Committee organized expert review, and reported to the State Administration of Cultural Relics for the record, the China Museum Association decided to agree to the Wanzhou District Museum as the third batch of national second-level museums.

The treasure of the town hall of the Wanzhou Museum in Chongqing is three oriental sword-tooth fossils, because archaeologists were found in Yanjinggou, Xintian Town, so it is also called Yanjinggou ancient elephant. The largest ancient elephant fossil in Yanjinggou is 6 meters long, 3 meters high, and the ivory is more than 2 meters long. It has preserved the complete skull, ribs, sword teeth, leg bones and other bones. It is the most complete fossil of an oriental sword teeth in the world. According to experts, the Oriental sword-toothed elephant lived in the late Meso-Pleistocene 500,000 to 600,000 years ago. It was the "big Mac" after the dinosaurs, the largest sword-toothed elephant weighed ten tons, mainly grass and leaves, and could eat up to 1 to 2 tons per day. In the warm forests of South China at the time, the Oriental sword-toothed elephant lived with animals such as giant pandas and tigers in South China. Therefore, both the Oriental sword-toothed elephants and giant pandas were considered the most representative animals in southern China in the Pleistocene. The sword-toothed elephant is as its name, because its long teeth are like two sharp long swords, so name. But due to the earth's climate change, after the Quaternary Ice Age, the temperature dropped, the climate gradually became cold and dry, resulting in many subsequent fauna decline and extinction, the oriental sword-toothed elephants were not spared, leaving only countless fossils to indicate that they once existed. The saber-tooth was widely distributed around the world and found in foreign countries millions of years ago, but found elsewhere is limited to small parts of the skull and teeth. The outcrop strata in Wanzhou District covers the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic in the geological epoch. Some places have Palaeozoic Permian strata that are 100 million years old; The most common are the Mesozoic Triassic and Jurassic, which are the most widely distributed in the Jurassic, followed by the Triassic; there are also the Quaternary strata of the Cenozoic from 2.58 million to 10,000 years ago. Dinosaur fossils, fish fossils and carbide fossils have been found in the Jurassic strata, and a large number of Quaternary mammal fossils have been buried in karst caves. Along with the Oriental sword-toothed elephants, bamboo rats, sword-toothed tigers, leopards, Sumatran rhinos, claws, buffalo, ancestral deer, deer, wild boar and other animals, which together constitute the "animal world" in the Yanjinggou area more than a million years ago.
