I first volunteered at the Ukutula Conservation Centre in March 2015. Little did I know that it would be a place I would fall in love with and go back to three more times. I am actually saving to go back in 2025!Volunteering here is a highly rewarding experience. As a volunteer, you typically take part in either cub or ranger duty. On cub duty, depending on how many cubs are currently there and their age, you will be required to feed, bath and stimulate them - all jobs their mothers would do in the wild. You also get the opportunity to supervise guests with the cubs. As somebody who has gained extensive experience of handling cubs, I find this aspect of the programme particularly rewarding! On ranger duty, tasks typically include collecting carcasses for the lions and vegetables for the game species. My favourite thing to do on rangers is feeding the adult lions - such an awesome thing to watch. However, before doing so, volunteers have to help carve up the carcasses which is often a great laugh. Cleaning enclosures is always fun too. Volunteering is not all about hard work though. You also get the amazing chance to go on walks with older lions - some of them are as old as 8. As a returning volunteer, I have seen lions I previously helped look after as cubs on these walks - it’s so amazing to see them interacting with their natural environment as they would in the wild. On my last visit I also went on their new observation deck - it was great to see some of the adult lions in the waterhole. Hospitality at Ukutula makes the volunteer experience great! Despite being on a working holiday, you get top of the range accommodation which is always cleaned. Food is appetising too. As a frequent volunteer, I have been allowed to spend an evening dining in their restaurant - the cuisine there is terrific. They also have an on site bar and for those who do not fancy drinking, they have a games room which includes a dart board, television and pool table.
