Old Colonial, Weston-Super-Mare by Marston's Inns

Stayed here a few years ago, and was lovely. But now it’s badly in need of a refurb. Looking very tired now and grubby. Very basic room, and not like the photos. Wouldn’t stay here again. Was going to have the breakfast there, but thought better of it after seeing the cobwebs behind the door in restaurant, so went down to Wetherspoons instead.

Sadly, this wasn’t a good visit to this hotel, we are disappointed we waited £207 on the rooms as our experience was not very nice. Firstly, when we arrived no one was manning the reception desk, we waited 10 minutes, rang the bell twice then finally someone came to the desk. We checked in, and was told that they stopped serving dinner at 9pm, it was even written on their sign on the desk. We went upstairs, to the bedrooms, they were ok, although the bathroom was grubby, shabby, falling apart, really smelly and needs updating. The shower gel dispenser almost empty, the extractor fan covered in dirt, grime and old dust, plus the staining on the ceiling too. The beds, ok, one was really hard and uncomfortable, the others ok. Bed sheets were clean. We got freshened up, popped over the pier, came back to the hotel at 7pm. Ordered a drink at the bar, bar staff was very moody, had a bad attitude and seemed really miserable. The atmosphere in the bar was also miserable, dull, lifeless and it was really really smelly in there, like a strong stale smell of BO. We got drinks, served by the half arsed bar staff, then we saw our glasses were filthy. For the cost of the drink too, it was rank! We were about to order food when the same moody staff member said ‘the kitchen is closed’. So we had to find another establishment to dine at. Which was nicer anyway and after seeing the filthy glass, I was relieved in some way. Then after dinner we came back to the hotel for 9.45pm, went to bed, then got up in time for breakfast. We went to go have breakfast, was told where to sit, and that we’d need to go to the bar to order. So we ordered some cooked breakfasts along with the continental option. Well, if you can call it continental’. It consisted of 4 stale pastries, some plain yogurt, no mixed fruit, as they didn’t have any available, and 2 gone off, bad apples, which were mouldy, squishy and like foam. They looked weeks old! Absolutely disgusting. The breakfast as cold, had thick, salty, grey bacon, and it just wasn’t nice at all. The cups dirty too. Not only that the tables in the bar/restaurant are all dirty, sticky and really grubby, the seats were too. We just hurried and went over to the pool table. We didn’t need to check out till 11am. But we were just sitting at the sticky tables by the pool table around 10:40am, and were basically told to hurry and leave by the moody bar staff. We thought this was rude and just uncomfortable. We’d already packed up anyway and all we needed to do was hand back the keys after checking out, which was online anyway. No one was at the desk when we checked out so we had to leave the keys in the basket provided. We felt so unwelcome, like we were a burden there. Not a very welcoming, friendly atmosphere at all. We wouldn’t stay there again or recommend this hotel unfortunately. It is a shame as the location is spot on and we love coming to Weston-Super-Mare a lot. Parking was ok, that was the only bonus really.

a lovely pub the people watch and relax with great beach views and a huge choice of drinks and good food,the staff are very friendly , me and my son played pool most of the afternoon . a must when in Weston or why not book a room there .

Old and falling apart inside. Tomato ketchup in Heinz bottle but clearly not Heinz. Filthy dirty carpet. Rude staff with bad attitude. Mould on ceiling above windows. Really needs a full ***** out and refurbish. Shame as could be a nice place to sit and enjoy some food and drink.

This is our 4th time at the Old Colonial this year and we love it here,the rooms are nice and clean with a nice bathroom and very comfy beds. It is right on the sea front and close to all shops and bars and with free parking. The only downside this time was the roast dinner had to send it back because it was cold and when we had it back it was not much better,plus the beef was processed and not proper beef but it is a nice place stay.

Overall it was a pleasant stay and certainly not the worst place to be. Pros and cons as you find in most places. Family rooms are spacious and beds are comfortable with a nice sea view. Nice location and the 11pm check in was ideal due to travelling on the evening and great staff can accommodate for this. Only downfalls: The shower had poor pressure and took several minutes to warm up then would become far too hot and take a lot of fiddling and waiting to get it to an ideal temperature. The bath mat had marks on on it also which was off putting. The extractor fan didn't work either and there was mould surrounding it unfortunately. The rooms are certainly not sound proof either, we could even hear the neighbouring room turn their light switch on/off. We did not try the food so cannot comment on this.

Lovely quick stopover. Clean and tidy .spacious room. Excellent value for money. The rooms have had a well needed refresh. We have stayed here numerous times for the best part of 20 years. Credit to them, this was probably the nicest stay we have had. We had food in the bar downstairs, couldn’t fault it. good value pub grub. Staff were excellent. Couldn’t do enough for us. We had a teenager with us, so the pool table , darts and the board games available enhanced our family time. Will definitely be returning and recommending.

Absolutely amazing hotel!! I live locally and come here almost every day. Before learning to cook, I actually ate here everyday and their food is really good. It’s such a nice, chilled, relaxing bar, allows dogs, even gives them water and treats!! The staff are second to none, always so helpful and friendly, really make you feel your custom is appreciated. I cannot recommend The Old Colonial enough.

We booked 2 nights at this hotel after reading good reviews, however our experience was very different from what the reviews suggested! When we checked in we were told that food was served until 8 pm and drinks till 10pm. We confirmed this when we went to the bar for a drink. We came down from our room at 7.45 to order our food, only to be told that they had closed the kitchen! We stated that we had been told that we could order food until 8, but it made no difference. This was very disappointing and totally unacceptable, they knew we were staying there and had told them we wanted to eat, but they didn't even tell us they were closing early. I find that unacceptable. Also, the room was NOT serviced and we had just 2 teabags between 2 of us for two nights!!! The experience was not a good one and we would never go there again!
