The Peninsula Shanghai

Het hotel was erg luxe en de kamers waren netjes en comfortabel. Het ligt op slechts 100 meter afstand van de Bund, wat ideaal is voor een prachtig uitzicht. De service was uitstekend; ze hebben zelfs een vergeten item gratis via koerier naar ons teruggestuurd. We zullen hier zeker weer verblijven voor onze volgende vakantie.

Het is waar dat ik hier kwam voor de kerstboom, maar de ervaring was echt slecht. Je kunt zien dat het personeel ook hulpeloos is door de stroom mensen, maar het zijn duidelijk bewoners en ervaren geen speciale behandeling. De lobby beneden staat vol met scalpeurs. Als je wilt lunchen, kun je geen zitplaats. Kan naar het naastgelegen restaurant gaan om te eten. Maar het kamertype is goed en Chanel bevindt zich op de eerste verdieping van het hotel. Misschien heb je de volgende keer een betere ervaring als je niet tijdens de kerstperiode verblijft.

Ik bracht mijn kinderen naar Shanghai voor hun verjaardag en voelde de kerstsfeer in Shanghai. De kerstsfeer in het hotel was geweldig. Van de receptie tot het zwembad, al het personeel was erg beleefd. Ze wisten dat de kinderen hier waren vierden hun verjaardagen en gaven ze zelfs kleine cadeautjes en handgeschreven wenskaarten. , zeiden de kinderen dat Kerstmis volgend jaar komt

Ik had een aanzoekceremonie op 2 december en het hotel heeft me een upgrade gegeven naar een speciale suite met uitzicht op de rivier. Tijdens het decoratieproces moest er een groot aantal bloemen worden vervoerd en de frontoffice nam het initiatief om mij te helpen met het vervoeren ervan. Tijdens het decoratieproces moest de tafel in de woonkamer worden weggedragen en het hotel was erg behulpzaam en stuurde onmiddellijk iemand om te helpen. Samen met mijn verloofde een onvergetelijke avond doorgebracht op het schiereiland. Nogmaals bedankt

What can I say about this place that hasn't been said before? It's the second time that we stayed at the Peninsula. This second time was actually a last minute idea on our way out from Shanghai. This time, we finally got to see the Peninsula pool and it was amazing! Honestly the best hotel pool I've ever seen! The breakfast was once again, amazing. All the art deco accoutrements are so beautiful as well. It is really one of the most awesome places one could stay and it was fortunate that we did. If you're trying to decide where to stay in Shanghai, it doesn't get much better than this!

The room comes with fantastic view facing the iconic river. Room setup and bedding are great and the hotel serve great breakfast. Fantastic experience 😊

Peninsula, Shanghai is not luxury. It's a 15 year old hotel with poor service, frustrating check in procedures and awkward staff. The hotel is noisy: staff shouting at each other; ayis on every level talking loudly into their phone; drivers in the lobby watching their phones with volume turned up full. Nobody looks happy - not the staff, not the guests. It feels rushed, awkward and it's a total rip off for what you get. This hotel gives the impression of being 600 rooms with 15 staff to manage it all. However it is the same number of rooms as The Puli Spa Hotel which is run like a well-oiled machine and which is a delight to stay at, for half the price but 150% more enjoyment. The Peninsula is not. It is chaotic and noisy. You are a hamster on a wheel. Check in was pathetic. I wasn't offered to sit, but told to go outside and ‘’someone would call me when my room was ready’’. Nobody called. Pouring rain outside, with an umbrella shoved in my hand and not a smile. My room stank of cigarette smoke, as did the hallway. My luggage took 45 minutes to arrive after 2 calls to reception. After hours of complicated communication, I was moved to a different room, that thankfully only reeked of cognac. That took until 9pm on the day of check in. Every surface of the room has a button to do something. Loud bathroom music turned on in the bathroom every 10 minutes through the night until midday the next day when staff turned off the power to that setting. No sightseeing or business meetings for me. Just waiting for a habitable space, wondering what $700/night is getting me. The breakfast is lacklustre at best. A large a-la-carte menu and a central buffet. Underwhelming, not delicious. The central buffet is not lit, so prepare to squint to establish what is on offer. The staff are rushed. The noise: incredibly loud. The instrumental music in the lobby is deafening. Guests are shouting over the music to talk. Staff are shouting over the guests to be heard. Then a driver waiting to collect someone is forced to turn his phone volume up so he can watch his show. Shopping is being delivered, the doorman/counter is shouting at guests, the woman who opens the door is bumping into more people than she is seeing through. A rattling, exhausting experience. Afternoon and early evening are the most startling auditory experiences - a live band with lead singer cleared the room. The drivers seemed to appreciate it though. The Peninsula has a Valet Box for parcels. I had multiple parcels delivered during my stay. Every time I had to follow up with the receptionist to find out where the parcels are. Eventually went down to the Concierge who seemed surprised when I requested my parcels to be delivered to the Valet Box. ''Oh right! We can use the Valet box!''. Room design is ok. It wants to be Deco but fails. The complicated buttons, valet box, sliding doors, screens etc - that's a good extra $200/night you're paying for. The bathroom boasts the worlds tiniest toilet. The bed is more comfortable than most beds - but not plush. The writing desk is complicated - with a dated console integrated into it, which outdates the Peninsula's 15 year life. I had a Pudong view, which was lovely. The Spa area feels good - marble, dark wood panelling. The sauna, unfortunately but unsurprisingly, has uncomfortably loud instrumental music playing, making it unusable. Highly appreciated that there is some common sense, at least, with the pool - no swimming caps are needed - a rare find in Chinese hotels. The gym was great and used daily. There is absolutely nothing elegant, romantic or relaxing about the Peninsula, Shanghai. It's proximity to the Bund is all it has going for it. If this area is where you want to be, try Waldorf Astoria or Shanghai Edition. If you want a taste of modern China, which is classy, insightful and hospitable, go to the Puli. For the money you save, you can be buying one Songmont bag a day.
