This is a small family run hotel in a reworked mansion of what was once a prominent family in the area. The family who runs it is most welcoming and on the premises mostly all the time. Their English is quite good and they enjoy meeting and talking with their guests. The breakfast spread is really nice and they have fresh made apple juice in season and local sausages and cheeses. This not a “luxury” hotel as such, its just a a nice comfortable, quiet and clean place to relax and enjoy northern Bavaria and the Spessart Mountain area. The rooms have stoves, refrigerators and are fully stocked with dishes so one can buy food in the local markets and prepare it and then dine on the balcony or in the garden areas which have really pretty views. The area does not get many foreign tourists. So, it is a great place to experience typical small town Franconian culture in a place where the occasional foreigner is still welcomed and not treated as a commodity to be exploited. There is an extensive and well marked trail system in the area that provides great day hikes and bike trails to the small villages nearby, with some really nice vista points and beautiful forests. A ten minute walk gets you to the Schöllkrippen village center. There is a really nice little winery in nearby Rottenberg (Weingut Holler) and some nice small direct market farms such as RohrgrundHof in the area. The photos I attached show sunrise from my room and views along the trail system.
