Il Castello di Campello

Although a lovely (but hard to find) location and a good room this was not what we expected. No one was around when we arrived (although we advised arrival time in advance) and we had to enquire at a nearby hotel about obtaining access to our room. We were advised to phone for help and had to wait 20 mins for someone to arrive. The rooms are managed by a restaurant business some 7km away. The so called breakfast is in this restaurant and consists of coffee and a cake from the bar. Although the staff were charming and the room was good this did not make up for the dreadful check in arrangements. Avoid or take your chance.

We had a comfortable and lovely experience. You will find a one of a kind experience in an ancient castle located on a mountain side. Gorgeous views! Our apartment was very cozy and homey. We had everything you could ever need in our place: tv, Wifi, kitchenette, heating, coffee machine, and more! The staff Will accompany you to the site and there is parking available! You can also have your breakfast delivered to your room! This is an experience you have to try!

We booked and stayed for a week after reading favourable reviews. There were, however, some important issues that we did not know and that you would probably like to know before you book. The apartments are in an old fortified hilltop village, completely surrounded by walls. Our apartment (house #8) was sitting on the wall, with one window offering a splendid view over the valley and mountains to the west with beautiful sunsets, the other to the old churchtower (no bells ringing) and illuminated at night. While this sounds and (was) idyllic, there are many more picturesque villages than Campello Alto throughout Italy. Only fourty people still live there, plus maybe the same number of tourists in high season. There are no shops, no restaurants, not even a bakery or a cafe in the village. At night, only cats. Plus, if you want to go and see any other place in Umbria, you have to drive down 10 minutes on a curvy road to Campello Basso in the first place. You definitely need a car. If you want to stay in just one place and relax, do not go there. We thought it to be a “distributed hotel” like the one we stayed in Santo Stefano or like “ Borgo Campello” at the same place. Borgo Campello has a reception and dining facilities, “Castello Campello” has none. When we arrived, nobody we met knew our property. No info on that beforehand. We left the owner a message who then arrived from below after 20 Minutes and handed over the apartment. He’s Albanian, did not speak English, but was accompanied by somebody who did. We had a medical issue during our stay. Without reception, we again left him a message that remained unanswered. Breakfast was included. We were unaware that breakfast would be served in a bar in Campello Basso, 5kms on a curvy road. It was o.k. for us, as most of our trips required to go down anyway. However, you should not forget anything in your room or might want to brush your teeth or visit the bathroom after breakfast. The apartment itself was recently made up and o.k. It had a modern kitchen, but if you want to cook and “dine in”, you have only a quite small table and lounge chairs to sit for that purpose. No place to sit outside. If you plan to do some pc work there or writing or reading, it is difficult. On the positive side: very quiet at night, so you should sleep well. Strong air condition. Parking space not too far away outside the walls. Excellent wifi, however, not the one the owner recommended (this was very slow), but another one that was open and strong. Strange. All in all, knowing all of this beforehand, I would have selected a different place.

Posto meraviglioso , il castello dispone di mini appartamenti molto curati caldi e molto molto puliti… il personale che gestisce la struttura ti trasmette tutto il proprio amore per essa …. Appartamento molto curato spazioso …. Bagno con docce spaziose e molto calde … davvero un posto che ne vale la pena …. C’è anche una macchina del caffè in cialde e un bollitore per il te’ ad uso gratuito ricaricata dalle signore delle pulizie .. in attesa di scendere dove c’è il ristorante fuori dal castello a 7 km circa ma credetemi non pesa per nulla scendere a fare colazione e poi proseguire la giornata nei dintorni….il ristorante poi si mangia magnificamente a prezzi assolutamente giusti …. Che dire tutto molto molto bello curato ti senti coccolato posto dove staccare la spina

fate attenzione a quando prenotate la colazione inclusa va consumata a circa 10 chilometri dalla struttura,un dramma!Noi lo abbiamo saputo solo all'arrivo in camera. Accertatevi pure del funzionamento dell'aria condizionata,noi abbiamo trascorso una notte infernale,mai più e mai lo consiglierei.

Un recupero, sebbene non ancora ultimato in qualche porzione adiacente le mura, davvero magnifico. Un ritorno al medioevo con una vista mozzafiato da uno dei torrioni meglio recuperati. Solo un paio, purtroppo, di brutture (è inevitabile che qualcuno voglia lasciare un segno di modernità a discapito della bellezza). Da visitare assolutamente.
