The Mey Hotel

Had a great overnight stay at this lovely hotel on our way to John O Groats. It is very close to the lovely Castle of Mey (worth a visit). Emma and Euan were very welcoming and rooms were extremely comfortable, beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean. There was a nice sitting area outside the room in a courtyard area. Breakfast was to order the night before and was lovely. We had our evening meal on arrival. There was a good choice and the food was excellent. Emma and Euan were very friendly and made time to chat to their guests. It was a pleasure to meet them and we would have no hesitation recommending them. Alwyn Summerville Co Armagh

We arrived here Saturday night planning to book in for a couple of meals over the week. Due to staff shortages this was not possible as the hotel guests had to be fed. We understood this but were assured we were welcome for beer only. The beer was bottled beer and easy to serve and we said cheerio and we’d be back in a couple of nights. We returned two nights later having walked one and a half miles to the pub in rain - just for a couple of bottled beers. The lounge was empty but we were not allowed in and the door was shut in our face. We then had no choice to walk the one and a half miles back in a hail storm. This hotel is obviously not welcoming to the public and don’t expect to call in and even get a bottle of beer.

We stayed two nights at this hotel in May 2024 as part of our trip around the north coast 500. There are few hotels and restaurants in this part of Scotland. The Mey Hotel meets a real need and provided a tranquil and comfortable stay. The rooms are well equipped and outside there was a seating area where you could enjoy what was, we are aware, extraordinarily good weather. Inside there is a comfortable lounge and bar and dining area. Breakfast was served to order at the time requested and the evening meals had a good choice and welcome home-cooked tasty food. Emma and Euan are friendly, caring and knowledgeable about the area. They are passionate about providing a great experience and they succeed. Mey itself is a great place for visiting Orkney, Dunnett Point and to visit the Castle of Mey and gardens. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and I recommend it wholeheartedly as a place to stay in this far northern part of Scotland.

Booked in to this lovely family hotel. Very nicely presented court yard rooms. Ideal for dogs. Nice large garden area to exercise dogs behind the hotel. Easy walking distance to the castle of mey. The hosts were very helpful. And food was excellent. We will definitely be going again. Highly recommended.

Lovely accommodation, great home cooked food and lovely hosts. We stayed for 1 night whilst on the NC 500. What a lovely small hotel, beautiful rooms and a lovely, informal and friendly atmosphere. We will find an opportunity to return - a real gem of a place.

A warm welcome from Emma and Euan , then relaxed in a well decorated lounge / bar by the fire. Bedroom in the old stable nicely decorated and comfy. Excellent evening meal and breakfast too, the next day. Highly recommend staying here or dining, but be aware to book in advance.

New to the area we decided to try the Mey Hotel for food last night. A very warm welcome from the owners Ewan and Emma, lovely decor, nice & warm on a cold wet night and the food was great. Smoked seafood starter to share, haggis, neeps and tatties and fish & chips. Highly recommended and we will be back.

Euan and Emma could not have given us a warmer welcome. Euans Haggis, Neeps and potato starter was outstanding. The venison casserole cooked to perfection and the lightest of ginger sponges for pudding. Portion sizes were perfect and our conversation with Euan and Emma was a bonus . They were so friendly and relaxed. We would highly recommend this hotel and wish them all the best.

We stayed here for a night on our NC500 adventure. The room and bathroom were spotless and the bed was comfortable. I am not really a fan of “motel” type rooms ( outside the main hotel with an outside door leading directly into the bedroom) but it was fine for one night. The owners have obviously invested a lot of hard work into the business, although there is more to do, the service was excellent. We had a great evening meal and breakfast.
