This peaceful resort is tucked away in luscious greenery accessed via a winding road fringed by precariously balanced Buddhist stacked stones. Which set the scene perfectly. We arrived to the warmest welcome I have EVER received in the hundreds of hotels i have stayed in. John, the wonderfully eccentric owner, who was busy helping another guest with his scooter, skipped over in mid conversation. like we’d known him for years. After being distracted by a squawk he explained it was his young pet parrot who he whistled for and was immediately joined by a beautiful bird who flew from the trees. The bird flies freely around the resort and visits the rooms, showers with guests, and John is rarely seen without her balanced on him somewhere. After simple check in (he may ask for 2,000 baht deposit - but is just as likely to wave it) He offered us a choice of villas although the same inside slightly differently positioned within the grounds. He had a wonderful manner of making you feel totally like you should feel at home from the off, almost encouraging you to have fun joking you can run straight from the bed into the pool - which i actually did on the second day. The villas are spotlessly clean with a large well appointed living room, Tv with netflix, kitchen with cooker and fridge microwave etc (you can pick up your free range fresh eggs from the reception every morning), good sized bedroom overlooking verdant gardens and pool, bathroom (annoying shutter door - but hey get over it) large walk in shower, large decking area with loungers, garden with more loungers and private pool with jacuzzi jets. What more could you need? The villa has wonderful and variable lighting from movable lamps, garden, patio and pool lighting, under bed lighting, candles and dimmers so you can fix the mood to suit. All the doors and windows fully open allowing breeze to blow though the villa which means you aren’t trapped in an air con box all day. However if you like a chill ice box you can shut everything up and whack on the air con and that’s nice too. It’s a 25 minutes walk to really lovely beach Ma Naem, alternatively 5 mins drive, scooter, taxi all of which John can arrange. Beach has gorgeous swimmable sea (which can’t be said for much of koh samui (largely too shallow or rocky) soft sand, plenty bars restaurants etc. John often describes himself as your private butler (indeed in a previous life he was one) and he lives up to that, seemingly equally available and amenable to all guests day or night - whenever we passed him he was always helping someone or chatting or laughing - really born to host. Takeaway menus readily available in rooms - anything can be delivered. If you fancy adventures, quad bikes etc or need practical things like laundry again John is the man and will get you local rates. If you are after a reasonably priced, slice of tranquility this is for you. Enjoy and say hello to John and his bird from us.
