There are a lot of negative reviews for this property. Take them with a grain of salt. Overall I would say it was not spectacular, but not terrible.
The water slides were our biggest draw since we were traveling with our kids (11 and 15). They were really fun and fast, and open 10 to 5 every day except Monday; that info is hard to find online but it was posted at the property.
Our favorite part was the beach. This RIU has a beautiful beach, nice soft sand, plenty of chairs. There is a rental place onsite where you can borrow snorkels, sailing equipment, kayaks, etc. There is also the option to rent waverunners. The wait staff (for drinks) does visit the beach but it seemed like it was a much longer wait than when we stayed at the RIU Palace in Playacar. They do bring you cups of pineapple, watermelon, and cucumber, which was very enjoyable!
The pools were okay. Not as clean as I expected after the RIU Palace. The snack bar by the pool was not well kept and one day had empty ketchup packets, etc. strewn around.
The dining options are thoroughly mediocre. We ate a little of everything and got a full belly every meal, but nothing was great. Often the food that should have been hot was cold, and the tastes were bland.
Our room was quadruple occupancy, but they always brought two washcloths instead of four. Also, many of the wall outlets were faulty. It was hard to charge our devices because the plugs would pop right out of the outlets. But it was clean and comfortable.

The main buffet rstaurant is very smelly and there is terrible ventilation in it!
Generally, if you are looking for a fancy experiance with fancy restaurants , this is not your place

Great staff! Ocean view rooms were nice. Beach was excellent. Plenty of pool options. Clean resort. Food was not very good at any of the restaurants. Most items were over cooked or not warm. Buffet was probably best overall. Ok alcohol selection, but nothing high end. Budget and kid friendly resort.

The food was terrible and not fresh my daughter has diarrhea and vomiting,not comfortable to use stairs to get to 4th floor ,elevator for from the rooms most of the restaurants are buffets.

The only good thing about the visit was the checking process. But just as easy as they check you in to check out was horrible. To set up transportation the lady was short and dismissive. The food was nasty and cold. The staff was unfriendly and not welcoming. I have tried a Riu for the second time recently and am not impressed. I won’t be back to a Riu. Not worth the money.

Excellent stay. Property is wheelchair friendly. Allowed us to walk and enjoy facilities with wheelchair bound guest.
Outstanding staff member Jose, the person that places and arranges the chairs on the beach. Helped me to carry my husband to the beach from where the walk ends and he was able to enjoy the beach and be close to the water he loves!!!! Thank you Jose!! You made the difference!

We had a great time until day 6. On day six we got a new cleaning person that did not clean our room good at all. They did not take out the dirty towels, clean the toilet, or restock the fridge or coffee bar. On the same day a credit card came up missing out of my wife’s wallet that was in the room and we got a fraud alert of somebody trying to use it off the property. We addressed it with the hotel staff and they opened a claim. The next day there was a hotel worker that was peeking in our peep hole and entered the room without knocking. My family saw him and made a noise which caused him to turn around, and when he saw my family, he ran off. He did not have a rag in his hand, cleaning supplies or housekeeping cart. While we were still at the property, I met with an assistant manager who took the incident very serious until we left the property. However, after we checked out, we could not get communication in regards to the progress of the claim very easily. I had to email them twice asking About the claim. Days later, they finally replied, saying that they were very sorry, but there was no evidence that their employees took the card and that what the other employee was doing was normal protocol. I don’t believe that. The timing of these two incidents is was a coincidence. This was a great resort in a lot of ways, but this made me feel very unsafe, which is my number one priority when taking my family to Cancun.

Food was not good. After reading reviews upon arrival I can see how people get food poisoning. The shows are unorganized and sloppy. The rooms don’t have double queens but full sized mattresses and it’s hard to accommodate 4 people in one room. Some staff was not very kind or helpful but given the massive flow of people it’s understandable.

We had a great time at Riu Dunamar. The place is well mantained, the staff is very nice and the beach is wonderfull! An special shout-out to the entretainement crew!
