Myself and my husband are just back from a 2 night stay. It's a lovely hotel with nice cosy bars and foyer spaces. As we are vegan, I looked up the options online and also asserted same when booking. We picked this hotel because there was an Italian Restaurant and Char Bistro and we got dining credit as part of our deal. The first night we went to the Italian Restaurant. We were handed a menu with 2 courses on it and no vegan options. When we enquired I was waiting for the a la carte menu but the waitress just verbally told us soup or garlic bread to start and ravioli for mains, so no choice on the mains. Imagine if meat eaters were treated the same way. We ordered the soup and reasserted that we were vegan and to make sure the bread was vegan. The soup came down with soda bread and butter. I told the server that we had asked the previous server for vegan bread. They came back with boring aerated gluten free bread and said they hadn't been told we wanted vegan. bread. A lot of staff confuse gluten free with vegan, which is infuriating and incorrect. The sliced white and brown bread at breakfast, for instance, is vegan. The soup was lovely, bread awful and made for a very stressful meal. The ravioli arrived. There was no veg etc do 2 bites in it was boring and samey. When we we to pay we were charged a staggering 32.85 for 2 courses, even though we hadn't ordered off that menu. Vegan breakfast the next day was lovely. I had asked for a nice room but room as my husband had just retired, 319 with a view of a derelict building and the constant sound of the extractor apparently was same!! The next evening we dined in Char Bistro. The menu was different than the one advertised online and there were not nearly as many vegan options. However, the staff were really friendly and helpful. I ordered fajitas which were gorgeous. It would have been great to have soya strips with them. My husband ordered the tofu curry which was also gorgeous and he had apple fritter for dessert and I had berry sorbet, both lovely. Some things labelled vegan on the menu were not actually vegan and HD contains milk etc in the allergen list?!! This is a lovely hotel and Char Bistro was a much more positive experience than the italian a d our 25e each vouchers covered same. Vegan options really need to be clearly labelled and there ha to be more choice. There wasn't even a vegan breakfast listed. We has to get veggie without eggs. The addition of vegan sausages would be good too.
