We arrived at 4 pm and checked in after 7 pm. The front desk said that the hotel system has crashed, everyone can't check in, and they can't give a time when it can be restored. The location of the hotel is very good, you can walk to the aquarium, but the room facilities are outdated and need to be updated. The toilet was always beeping and the shower water wouldn't leak. I was expecting a much nicer hotel given the price, but I was disappointed. The facilities were a bit old,small and they didn't have many rooms with double queen beds for me and my guest. Also, no drivirng range for a golf course seems odd to me. Had to wait for a room upon checking despite arriving in the middle of the afternoon, but wasn't at 4pm. My safe was broken in the room, the room and bathroom were small.

This hotel used to be amazing. In the past, I would have paid the premium cost for the service, location, and experience. Now, I just can't say that anymore. I have stayed at the Portola hotel a number of times and the last few times, it just hasn't been that great, yet they still charge the same premium price The hotel is in a great location, which is still a draw, but the experience has become average. I love going to Monterey and this hotel was a reason I would want to come back, but now I find myself looking elsewhere. Portola just doesn't meet the expectations they put forward for the premium price they charge. So if you get a good price on that harbor view room, I would say go for it. Note, you may end up with a partial view looking at the roof of a building across the way, with a partial view of the water. But I would stay here again if the price was right. But if prices are the same as some of the other waterfront hotels, I will likely book elsewhere.

1. There is free parking, but it is actually on the side of the road. When you checkin, ask yourself. 2. There is free WiFi but the signal is normal, sometimes it will break 3. The new management company has upgraded the rooms very nicely and whatever they are doing with staff training is amazing I have not met a single person who’s been less than delightful since checking in early at 1 PM.

Very comfortable hotel conveniently located in downtown Monterey and short distance from 17 Mile Drive. Rooms are spacious and staff is very friendly. Room amenities are: individual sized coffee pot and mini fridge as well as standard hair dryer, toiletries and iron. Microwaves can be delivered to your room by request at no additional cost. The Marriott has a bar and serves breakfast (not included in room rate) and other meals. It is connected to the Monterey Convention Center so if you are attending a conference, this is the best place to be. If you need parking, be aware, only valet parking is available at $40 per day with in and out privileges. There are a couple parking garages with hourly rates within a couple block walk, they do not have in and out privileges. Valet service takes about 10-15 minutes to get your car depending on time of day. Mornings were a little longer wait. Wifi is not free unless you are a Bonvoy Member, you can sign up on the spot. Would stay here again.

Let's be honest - Monterey Bay is expensive. I want the most bang for my buck and I feel that I get it at Casa Munras. It is definitely my favorite hotel on the peninsula - and I have stayed at many of them, worked at many of them, and lived in all my favorite cities here. Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove - this hotel is my favorite one that I can also afford on the regular. I love the Spanish style décor. I absolutely love their beds and pillows - I sleep so good here, and the best part is the location. You can walk out of the hotel, down the street, and you're in downtown, walk a little further and you're on fisherman's wharf. Go up the street and you're at the mall. Go a little further up the street and you have the freeway right there to take you to Carmel or PG or wherever you want to go. However, there are a few negatives to this property: 1. The internet is not fast (especially depending on the building you stay in) and they do not give you the option to pay for upgraded internet. 2. You have to pay for parking - which I believe is $17/night, but I just factor that into the cost of the room when I book. 3. Not all rooms offer a mini fridge, you have to pay for an upgrade to get a room with a fridge. What's that about? All rooms should have this! Everywhere!

I chose Ctrip to book this hotel one month in advance and paid the full amount online. When I arrived at the hotel, I was informed that there was no twin room. We just spent the weekend here and the best thing is the location. Great restaurant's within steps of the hotel and just a 5 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf and a great promenade walk along the ocean that go's forever passing Cannery Row and places to stop for breakfast or just coffee. The hotel was built in 1904 and had great antiques but if we stayed there again, we'd request to be in the new building, the one you see the photo's of more modern furnishings. The older part is old and our bed was awful but we saw that they were replacing all the mattresses wishing they'd replace ours. I think we'd stay there again, but in the new building.

I cannot say enough about the high level of service at this hotel. From the moment of arrival, the staff was friendly and answered all of our questions. The valet, front desk, and housekeeping staff were super pleasant and went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. The rooms were a nice size and very comfortable. The window seats were a great place to sip a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise. Breakfast tray in the morning was simple but sufficient. Nice way to start the day. WIFI was easy to access and worked well. The location of this hotel can't be beat. Steps away from the Aquarium, restaurants, shops, and of course the beach. Evening wine reception was nice touch. I will say that the decor is a little dated and could use a refresh. However, it did not detract from the pleasantness of our stay. One thing to note - parking is valet. $32/day.

This hotel is all about the service. Their staff are amazingly helpful and friendly. Their breakfast was more than I expected and they have a more than adequate spread. I had the twin family room with a fireplace. The room is a very good size. I did not use the fireplace as they had an electric heater and that was sufficient for me. The only issue with the room might be in the warmer months as they don't have air-conditioning and only have one ceiling fan. But given I was there in November , I was comfortable in the room. Although the hotel is a bit old, the room was well maintained and the bed was very comfortable. The hotel is in a good location as its less than 10 mins walk to the downtown restaurants and shops. You pretty much can walk to most places from the hotel in about 15 mins or so. I will come back when I am in Monterey again. At this price , they are a very food option and I am glad I chose to stay here.

Location is key here, we walked to the aquarium, Cannery Row, we could have walked to Pacific Grove, and we walked the other direction all the way to the Coast Guard Pier…And we walked to Schooners for dinner. Parking is $17 directly under the building, with just enough spaces for hotel guests, there’s one small elevator that services the entire inn, no breakfast/restaurant facility on site, no laundry, no coffee, but across the street is Wave Street Cafe which I highly recommend. Hope you get John when you check in, he’s professional (I had to call him a couple times before we even got there), knowledgeable, and probably the best innkeeper/check-in person we’ve come across, knew exactly what we needed. We stayed in the Wave Suite which is a 2-room suite, right next to the elevator. From the door you walk in to the first room which has 2 queens and the next room is the living room (with sofa bed) with bathroom, but there’s no door separating the living room from the bedroom. My husband had to do a zoom call late into the night because of the time difference and the kids and I were trying to sleep but we heard the entire call. I think the “family suite” has a door between the 2 rooms so that might be a better choice if you need a door separating you from the kids (for more privacy) or you from a noisy sleeper/zoom call etc. At night the outdoor fireplace pits are nice. In the morning at 4:30am we heard the trash(?) trucks beeping up the street and then down again, no fault of this hotel but bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper and you’re near the street, lot of street noise. When we stay in a new city, I like to walk around to get the vibe of the place, this place is definitely great for that, as everything “Monterey” is walkable.

Friendly staff, solid location, decent WiFi and generally clean and has the basics down. Better for sightseeing than for those staying in, I think. Quick things to note: they don't allow late checkouts, just fyi, but otherwise you just drop your keys in a box to check out. The vending machines are also located in an open area, which is nice for when I visited but could become an issue if it's raining... The balconies are really nice, and the location is insanely convenient. It's about 10ish minutes to walk to the aquarium, and it's a block (or half, if you go out the back!) to the waterfront. There's solid food and sightseeing options here too. They do have a decent parking lot, but there's a ton you can see in Monterey by walking, and this hotel is perfect for a lot of those. What's missing here: a common dining area and breakfast, for one. Rooms aren't cramped but most furnishing is basic. Don't expect anything fancy, essentially. All that said, it's a solid choice if you're actually going out and sightseeing vs spending tons of time here. And if you do, they have some pretty nice patios and some rooms have balconies overlooking a trail.

Good location, walk 10 minutes to the old fisherman's wharf, there is a Chinese supermarket on the right. The room structure is reasonable and easy to use, and the bedding and sofa are comfortable. Cold meals are available at 16:00 in the lobby, ham cheese fruit wine is very good. No hot food for breakfast and no meat, sorry. Overall good and worth recommending. Monterey town is beautiful, there is no parking near the aquarium, 17miles is beautiful, and the coastline of camel town is stunning.

The Marriott has a bar and serves breakfast (not included in room rate) and other meals. It is connected to the Monterey Convention Center so if you are attending a conference, this is the best place to be. If you need parking, be aware, only valet parking is available at $40 per day with in and out privileges. There are a couple parking garages with hourly rates within a couple block walk, they do not have in and out privileges. Valet service takes about 10-15 minutes to get your car depending on time of day. Mornings were a little longer wait. Wifi is not free unless you are a Bonvoy Member, you can sign up on the spot. Would stay here again.

We just spent the weekend here and the best thing is the location. Great restaurant's within steps of the hotel and just a 5 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf and a great promenade walk along the ocean that go's forever passing Cannery Row and places to stop for breakfast or just coffee. The hotel was built in 1904 and had great antiques but if we stayed there again, we'd request to be in the new building, the one you see the photo's of more modern furnishings. The older part is old and our bed was awful but we saw that they were replacing all the mattresses wishing they'd replace ours. I think we'd stay there again, but in the new building.

Stayed here for a couple of nights during a Big Sur road trip. Great central location, close to downtown and Trader Joe’s, Dennys and other stores are close by. Inside looks new and renovated, outside this place doesn’t look like much but was very comfortable and clean stay. Shower pressure was strong. Additional parking is under the building. Would recommend for an easy and comfortable stay.

This hotel used to be amazing. In the past, I would have paid the premium cost for the service, location, and experience. Now, I just can't say that anymore. I have stayed at the Portola hotel a number of times and the last few times, it just hasn't been that great, yet they still charge the same premium price The hotel is in a great location, which is still a draw, but the experience has become average. I love going to Monterey and this hotel was a reason I would want to come back, but now I find myself looking elsewhere. Portola just doesn't meet the expectations they put forward for the premium price they charge. So if you get a good price on that harbor view room, I would say go for it. Note, you may end up with a partial view looking at the roof of a building across the way, with a partial view of the water. But I would stay here again if the price was right. This hotel is all about the service. Their staff are amazingly helpful and friendly. Their breakfast was more than I expected and they have a more than adequate spread. I had the twin family room with a fireplace. The room is a very good size. I did not use the fireplace as they had an electric heater and that was sufficient for me. The only issue with the room might be in the warmer months as they don't have air-conditioning and only have one ceiling fan. But given I was there in November , I was comfortable in the room. Although the hotel is a bit old, the room was well maintained and the bed was very comfortable. The hotel is in a good location as its less than 10 mins walk to the downtown restaurants and shops. You pretty much can walk to most places from the hotel in about 15 mins or so. I will come back when I am in Monterey again. At this price , they are a very food option and I am glad I chose to stay here.

Thalia is the bomb and this place is stunning! I have been coming here for years and best trip yet. The new management company has upgraded the rooms very nicely and whatever they are doing with staff training is amazing I have not met a single person who’s been less than delightful since checking in early at 1 PM.
